It teaches all believers that it is not sufficient to bring light into their private domain; they must spread the light of Torah to other people as well, to the degree that their influence can go. By the end of the novel Melinda finally speaks to her mom and her ex-friends about the party, and the narrator learns that having the confidence to speak and speaking up can make somebody feel better. Moral/Ethical Implications of Euthanasia

Euthanasia refers to the act of removing support systems for the maintenance of life of a person suffering from a terminal or grave illness. Despite the negative arguments put forward against euthanasia, at least four ethical philosophies support the practice of euthanasia. Among these are utilitarianism, Kantianism, egoism, and emotivism. Each of these moral philosophies shall be discussed below to provide support to the practice of euthanasia. Utilitarianism Utilitarianism is an indispensable word in the study of normative ethics, whether it is medical, legal, or other professional ethics (Merriam-Webster Online). Indeed, utilitarianism could provide sufficient arguments against or in favor of removing life support systems of one who appears to have no hope of recovery from an illness. Utilitarianism, the theory that could either save a life or relieve pain and suffering in the above situation, has been entered in the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary as â€Å"a doctrine that the useful is the good and that the determining consideration of right conduct should be the usefulness of its consequences; specifically: a theory that the aim of action should be the largest possible balance of pleasure over pain or the greatest happiness of the greatest number (Merriam-Webster Online).† Utilitarianism is anchored on the principle called the â€Å"Greatest Happiness Principle,† which holds as morally right or ethical such actions that promote the greatest happiness for the greatest number (Mill). John Stuart Mill explained the said principle in his work entitled Utilitarianism in 1863. He explained, thus: The creed which accepts as the foundation of morals, Utility, or the Greatest   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Happiness Principle, holds that actions are right in proportion as they tend to promote    happiness, wrong as they tend to produce the reverse of happiness. By happiness is   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   intended pleasure, and the absence of pain; by unhappiness, pain, and the privation of   Ã‚   pleasure (Mill). Utilitarianism still exists at the present as a strong argument in favor of many ethical issues, such as the propriety of euthanasia. Applying utilitarianism to such a scenario, one could argue that removing the life support system would be in accordance with the â€Å"Greatest Happiness Principle.† Euthanasia would be justified under this moral philosophy because it is an act that would remove pain from the patient who, on his own, could not continue living. The same conclusion would be had if the situation is observed from the viewpoint of the patient’s family and friends, whose suffering would not be needlessly prolonged by the sight of their ailing loved one. Kantianism Kantianism is an ethical philosophy put forward by 18th century German philosopher Immanuel Kant (The Categorical Imperative, 2001). Kant, in his writings, presented a criterion of moral obligation that is a break away from the traditional moral philosophies of his time. Whereas traditional moral philosophies prior to his time focused on good character traits and the consequence of actions, Kant formulated one supreme principle of morality, which he called the categorical imperative. (The Categorical Imperative, 2001). He belongs to the deontological tradition, which is believes in the ethical theory based on conformity to duty, rather than utility or practical bearing. It is thus clear that deontology is in direct opposition to utilitarianism or pragmatism. (Deontology, 2006). Kant’s ethical theory provides for the categorical imperative, which is the ‘supreme principle of Morality’ on which moral actions are based. The categorical imperative is characterized by objectivity, reason and freedom of choice (The Categorical Imperative, 2001). In describing this standard, Kant stated , â€Å"So act, that the rule on which thou actest would admit of being adopted as a law by all rational beings (Kant, 1886).† According to Kant, this standard is â€Å"the only possible standard of moral obligation (Kant, 1886).† Under the categorical imperative, subjective considerations like emotions have no place; rather, morality is determined through rational considerations of necessity and obligation (The Categorical Imperative, 2001). Kant realizes that human will could be influenced by positive and negative factors, but claims that the human will remains supreme. According to him, only rational considerations matter when deciding moral dilemmas (The Categorical Imperative, 2001). Applying Kant’s moral philosophy on euthanasia, it could be argued that stripped of emotional underpinnings, reason would dictate the rule that a person wholly supporting on extraneous factors be relieved of his suffering, when all facts show no hope of recovery. Given such a situation, the general rule of removing life support systems would be wholly supported by reason. Egoism Another ethical philosophy that could be used to justify euthanasia is egoism. This moral philosophy is grounded on the notion of â€Å"self-interest† or welfare (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, 2002). This means that a person desires to promote his own welfare or interest in all his actions (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, 2002). Thus, this philosophy works in direct contradiction to the principle of altruism, which tend to minimize the maximization of one’s self-interest (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, 2002). Egoism obviously supports the concept of euthanasia, both from the point of view of the ill persona nd his friends and family. On the part of the former, it would be for his interest to remove all his sufferings in favor of non-being. On the other hand, the latter would benefit from the alleviation of worries and the deduction of expenses related to the hospitalization and medical support of the former. Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics Finally, another ethical philosophy that could support euthanasia is the one posited by Aristotle in his work entitled Nicomachean Ethics (Kilcullen, 1996). In this work, Aristotle expounded on the notion called virtue, which is is the determinant of a person’s or a thing’s nature or character (Kilcullen, 1996). Similar to the philosophy of Kant, Aristotle gives primacy to the notion of reason in determining or attaching moral value to any act or thought (Kilcullen, 1996). Applying this philosophy to euthanasia, it could be argued that reason would support the removal of life support systems provided that the facts warrant the lack of hope for the recovery of   the patient, because reason would recognize the futility of keeping support systes when there is no chance of recovery. The Shang Dynasty - History of Ancient China The Shang dynasty is thought to have lasted from c. 1600 to c.1100 BCE. It is also called the Yin Dynasty (or Shang-Yin). Despite the negative perceptions of illegal immigration, it is crucial for helping America. These immigrants help build America in the way that we envision it to be as, hard-working and appreciative. Compared to skilled workers, illegal immigrants that worked didnt have any skill that is applicable in their Jobs; therefore, they never moved up in terms of wages. Though, the unskilled workers werent able to benefit from this, they were dedicated to their work and were willing to work for a lower wage as opposed to there skilled workers. Ultimately, illegal immigration is necessary in order for America to achieve an increased economic productivity. In effect, this benefited legal/skilled workers from, 1997 to 2007 who experienced increased pay in complementary Jobs by 10%, says Adam Davidson. As an illustration, the illegal immigrants worked for a far lower pay, but even so, it was sufficient for them since they valued being able to work. It is clarified that illegal immigrants had appreciated the opportunities that America had offered them although they would not get every benefit out of them. If this discussion was looked upon from a different angle, it would be made obvious that illegal immigrants were somewhat losing benefits while they made a slight gain in working experience. As hard as workers had put in on the effort scale, they constantly improved themselves through skills that they were never required to have. As they were never questioned about what skills they were taught before being employed with their current Jobs causing them to work with what they knew. When you work with what you know, you constantly gain experience doing it more and thats even a specific box on every Job application that is willing to question your ability. While illegal immigrants had improved their skill and had not seen their wages go up to due to their status with citizenship, they faced a trouble within the economy whenever a depression was rising. This is a well-known example of how appreciative immigrants, whom have completely taken the risk of leaving their family on the streets of America, are towards the opportunities given at hand. America must possess something other countries dont because people would rather take the risks of sleeping on our streets than staying in homes that they grew up in. In regards to illegal immigrants contributing to America, native Mexican citizens contribute to the growth of America in various ways. Similar to the ways that legal citizens contribute to America, illegal citizens contribute likewise; they pay federal axes and sales taxes. Mexican immigrants paid nearly $600 million in federal taxes and sales taxes in 2002 use about $250 million in social services another $31 in uncompensated health care that leaves a profit of $319 million. The sales and federal taxes are used in order to improve universities, transportation, rebuilding/building complexes, etc. Hence, illegal immigrants are a big factor in the productivity of Americas economic growth. Though they are restricted to certain rights as opposed to legal citizens, they are entitled to better lives the way it is remised in the Declaration of Independence. We hold these truths to be self- evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their Just powers from the consent of the governed. This states that it is Americas obligation to help immigrants, regardless if they entered legally or illegally; we should be helping them since the Declaration is the foundation of our country ND it is our tradition that we help those people. Notably, there are people who value being in America and take advantage in a positive aspect of what there is in this country. Considering the many illegal immigrants that only benefit from what America has to offer, there are also many illegal immigrants who give to America in ways more than one. For example, I have a close friend who is an undocumented immigrant who values being able to live in America. He takes each day to be able to give back; teaching children at the local recreation center how to swim and how to appreciate what they have. At the high school that I graduated from, my friend is the Valedictorian and he set an example for my entire class. In his words, We should strive to be the epitome of perfect. Anything is possible if we put our minds to it. Be humble towards everything because l, an undocumented immigrant, am stripped of having the same opportunities that a documented immigrant has. Mrs Johnstone’s huge family all cramped up in the small, crumbling, graffiti covered terraced council housing with the rest of the workers and Mrs Lyon’s large elegant suburban detached house with is wrought iron street lamp and large windows and also with the interior of the houses only the kitchen of Mrs Johnstone’s house is shown overflowing with cooking utensils and laundry and other domestic trivialities but not a chair in sight which means Mrs Johnstone is always either shown standing up or sitting on the step whereas Mrs Lyons living room is shown with its tasteful decorating, art deco lamps, corner pillars and a large sofa in the middle where she is often shown sitting on offering another contrast between her and Mrs Johnstone. Another feature of the setting I particularly enjoyed was the raked stage which allowed better levels for the actors the stage is heavily raked, meaning that a lot of the action is easy to see from all over the house. The costume in the play is a strong representation of the social status of the characters and so everything about Eddie and Mickey’s clothes represents key parts of their life and how they have added to their character as their costumes are a large representative of the whole nature versus nurture theme of the play. Eddie as a seven year old wears very neatly pressed v neck sweater over an immaculately white shirt and short trousers whereas mickey was wearing a jumper so ragged and dirty its quite hard to determine what colour it is, it’s full of holes and stretches to well over his knees indicating it is most likely a hand me down. The contrast in the childhood upbringing of the two characters is apparent in their clothing, the closest Eddie has ever come to second hand clothes is when he meets mickey on the other hand mickey has probably grown up with his siblings old clothes and toys et cetera. The adolescent Mickey wears fashionable denim and leather. Which shows him at what was the peak of his life, the happiest his is to be in the play. The adolescent Eddie wears a very smart school uniform The adult Mickey again wears a baggy jumper. However this is when he is dominated by medicine. His clothing also illustrates the loss of that huge childhood energy he had at the beginning of the play. It is hard to determine what purpose the narrator serves. On stage he appears dressed in a smart black suit –reminiscent of funeral garb so sort of fore shadowing but the costume his gives him a neutral status, as we cannot identify anything about his character. It gives him a sense of anonymity throughout the show, and the fact that the other characters do not acknowledge him gives him a ghostlike quality except when he takes a picture of. The use of the orchestra collaborated well with the songs. The gunshot at the end of the play worked well as it shocked the audience despite them knowing the ending. There was a great contrast in lighting between the countryside and the city. In the countryside it was bright and the scenery consisted of typical green rolling hills and a crystal blue sky. However in the city the lighting was much darker and the scenery consisted buildings. When the front door of Mrs Johnstone house opened light flooded on to the stage. The purpose of this was to generate the idea of presence of Mrs Johnstone and her children living inside the house. The stage was lit up with a red light at the beginning of the end. This was used as an indicator of the bloodshed to follow. A red light also appeared when Mrs Lyons came on to the stage. This illustrated her madness and guilt stricken conscious. This was also done by the use of blackouts. A blue light appeared at the end when the narrator came on to the stage and sang. To illustrate the madness of Mrs Lyons in song flashing lights came on. The whole cause of the plot of the play, the death of King Hamlet, is an example of this. He is known to have conquered lands and fought a lot of wars. He can be considered one of the bold for he faced death head on and yet the reason why he died was not through his wars but instead he got killed in his own backyard, literally. This example is a perfect specimen as to why Helen Keller made the statement. It is exactly this, wherein he was killed in his own home, that she has this belief. Death, need not be found in dangerous grounds, for it can standing right outside your door. Somehow, the proverb hints at some form of fate or destiny but in the case of Hamlet, the proverb is made true because of a miasma of actions between King Claudius and Hamlet. Due to their need to resolve the issues between them for Claudius to hide his crime and for Hamlet to avenge is father – collateral damage in the form of the lives of the people around them were affected, if not taken away. It is Claudius and Hamlet that face their destinies and yet, the ones fearful for them received the same fate. Ophelia is the most innocent character in the play. She followed her father’s advice after being told that Hamlet will just break her heart. For fear of it being true, she obeyed her father, but this didn’t save her from the sorrow that she will experience later. In the process of helping Hamlet, Polonius dies by his hand and this drives Ophelia insane due to the extreme sorrow that she felt. She couldn’t protect herself from emotional pain that she tried to avoid. Queen Gertrude, who just wanted her son and her new husband to get along, ended up being poisoned. She, too, wanted to help her son and protect him from whatever malady it was that he was experiencing. She was afraid for Hamlet’s health and life. In the end, she was poisoned by a drink that was meant for Hamlet. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are the dynamic duo that tried to help their friend. The reason why they went to Denmark was to try and console Hamlet for the death of his father and try to unite him with his stepfather and uncle. Unknowingly, they were bringing Hamlet to his death. In their minds, all they were doing was bringing Hamlet to England to allow him time to recuperate. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern were killed instead. In the case of Hamlet, the proverb â€Å"The fearful are caught as often as the bold† applied to the people that surrounded Hamlet. This is what usually is called collateral damage, the damage that is inflicted on those beside the actual target. Also, these people who surround Hamlet are not at all mindful of their own danger. As a matter of fact, it never occurred to them that they will encounter death. However, they were afraid for Hamlet. Due to their affection for Hamlet, these characters tried to make him happy, protect him from himself, and protect him from others. In the end, all these people, afraid him, died tragically, even before Hamlet himself died.
